Patricia M. Sammons, 85, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, February 26, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.
She was born July 2, 1927, in La Porte City, daughter of George P. and Grace Kahler Rothmeier. She married Timothy E. Sammons Jr. on February 14, 1953, in Fort Meyer, VA; he died March 21, 1982.
Mrs. Sammons was a 1945 graduate of La Porte City High School and also graduated from Pitzi’s School of Beauty, Waterloo. She served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. She worked as a custodian for La Porte City schools for 10 years, helped on Telecare with the La Porte City Council on Aging for many years and volunteered at the La Porte City Museum. She was a member of the La Porte City American Legion U.S.S. San Deigo Post #207, VFW Post #3983, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also honored in September by being a part of an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
She is survived by four sons, James (Brenda) of Muscatine, Thomas (Nancy) and Kevin, both of La Porte City, and Jeffery (Brenda) of Washburn; seven grandchildren, Michael, Steven, Keith, Chad and Erica Sammons, Melissa (Joe) Lake and Jordan (Tonya) Gaffney; and four great-grandchildren, Parker, Hannah and Ashlyn Lake, and Brooklyn Van Hoozer.
Preceding her in death were her husband Timothy and two brothers, Joe and George Rothmeier.
Services were held March 2, 2013, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with military rites conducted by La Porte City American Legion U.S.S. San Diego Post #207 and the VFW Post #3983. Inurnment will occur at a later date in the West View Cemetery.
