On June 18th, 2014 a new ordinance went into effect in La Porte City, allowing the operation of golf carts on certain streets within the City limits.
Golf cart operators must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age. Golf cart operators must observe all state and local traffic control regulations and devises.
Golf carts are allowed on all City streets with the exception of Commercial Street (U.S. Hwy. 218). Carts may cross Commercial Street, but are not allowed to drive on that street. Carts are also allowed to operate on the trail between West Main Street and the Anton Addition; however when encountering pedestrians or bicyclists, carts must pull off the trail and come to a complete stop to allow the pedestrian or bicyclist to pass before continuing on the path.
Golf carts must be in good working mechanical order, and must not exceed to maximum load requirements of the vehicle. In addition, carts must have adequate brakes, display a slow moving vehicle sign, and a bicycle safety flag. Maximum speed limit for all golf carts is 25 miles per hour.
All golf carts operating on City streets must be registered with the City. Applications and permits can be obtained Monday – Friday at City Hall, 202 Main Street between the hours of 8 AM and 4:30 PM. At that time, applicants will be required provide cart information, VIN or serial number and also show proof of adequate insurance, as well as a valid driver’s license. The permit fee for golf carts is $35 annually.
The fine for operating a golf cart on City streets without a valid permit is $100.
