Five members of a strong senior class on the Union girls’ basketball team have earned a number of postseason honors. The Knights completed a perfect 16-0 season in the North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) East on their way to a 21-3 record overall and an appearance in a Class 3A regional final, where they suffered their only loss to a 3A opponent, Davenport Assumption. The Knights were led by Kaeli Block, the NICL East Player of the Year. Block, a 5’10” post player, was also named to the All-Region 5 Team by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and Class 3A Northeast All-District team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Block averaged 10.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Senior teammate Courtney Powell was also named to the 3A Northeast All-District team, as well as earning a NICL East First team spot. Courtney posted a league high 64 steals to just 25 turnovers in conference games, scoring at a 10.3 pt/game average clip.
NICL East Second team selections included senior forwards Jordyn Nagel and Maggie Driscol. The pair of sharpshooters hit 35.8% and 34.1% respectively from 3-point range in conference play with Jordyn averaging 8.6 pts per contest and Maggie 5.9 points per game.
Additionally, senior Jackie Barz was one of just 24 Iowa student athletes selected to the 2017 Academic All-State Basketball Team by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and was also cited as All-Conference Honorable Mention. Jackie averaged 4.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in league play.
