Iowa author Linda Betsinger McCann will talk about her newly released book, Prohibition in Eastern Iowa, at Hawkins Memorial Library on Tuesday, September 9, at 6 PM.
Prohibition was enacted in the United States in 1920, with the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment. For 13 years it served as the law of the land until it was repealed with the enactment of the Twenty-first Amendment in 1933.
McCann’s book examines the effect this controversial amendment had in Eastern Iowa, using interviews with people to illustrate how ordinary citizens became entangled in the issues surrounding the ban of the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages.
Copies of Prohibition in Eastern Iowa will be available for purchase.
