Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Black Hawk County is offering Fall Master Gardener classes, beginning September 16 through November 25, at the Dick Young Greenhouse (at George Washington Carver Academy), 1505 Logan Avenue in Waterloo. Cost is $195 for the Master Gardener class and $550 for Pro-Hort class. To register, send payment to Black Hawk County Extension, 3420 University Avenue, Suite B in Waterloo (50701). After September 2nd, a $25 late fee is assessed. This is the only class until fall 2015; classes will not be offered in Spring 2015.
Classes are offered on Tuesdays from 6-9:30 PM for 11 weeks and are taught by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach staff and specialists. The program offers 40 hours of instruction that covers topics such as soils and botany; plant pathology and entomology; weeds, IPM and pesticides; landscape trees and shrubs; animal ecology; fruits; turf; sustainable landscape design; vegetables; herbaceous ornamentals, and houseplants/propagation.
Participants become Master Gardener interns after completing the training. Upon returning 40 hours of volunteer service in the community, participants become certified Iowa State University Extension Master Gardeners. During 2013, Black Hawk County Master Gardeners completed over 4,000 hours of service in the community. It is the acquisition of knowledge, the skill in gardening, and giving back to the community that distinguishes a Master Gardener from other gardeners.
