Across the state of Iowa, voters will go to the polls on September 10, 2013 to elect represenatives that will serve on their respective school boards. In the Union Community School District, voters will fill five of the board’s seven seats. James Bronner, Kevin Sash and Brian Weber are each running unopposed for seats with four year terms that expire in 2017. Lisa Anton and Cathy Niebergall were appointed in 2012 to fill seats vacated by Denny McLaughlin and Carie Marrah, respectively. Each is now running unopposed to complete the remainder of those terms which expire in 2015. The candidates:

Lisa Anton, La Porte City

My graduating class was around 350 people at Ottumwa High School.  I graduated from Iowa State University—go Cyclones!  I’m a former city girl and moved to rural La Porte City with my husband, Mark, so we could enjoy country living and could benefit from the many positives that the Union School District has to offer our family. We have two daughters, Sydney (2nd grade) and Emily (Kindergarten).

I have been actively involved in the community since the girls were in preschool.  I am a strong supporter of our preschool, where I served on the board for three years.  This year, I will be working in the mornings at the preschool, as they have large classes of 4 year-olds— good for next year’s enrollment!  I have enjoyed volunteering at the preschool and elementary classrooms.  I am a sitting member of the LPC Elementary PTO and have enjoyed helping in that organization.   I also co-teach faith formation classes at our church. I am an assistant soccer coach for my daughter’s U-8 team, and this year, my husband and I are also co-leading our local 4-H group.

In October 2012, I replaced Carie Marrah and I have been on the school board since that time.  It has been fascinating to me to learn more about the district and I look forward to educating myself more as I complete the two years remaining on that term. We are so excited to be in this strong community and have so many positive things to say about Union.  My family and I are proud to call ourselves Union Knights!

 Cathy Niebergall, Buckingham

I work part-time for the City of Cedar Falls in the Finance department.  I’m married with three children in the Union School District.  I am interested in running for the school board because I want to be involved in the decisions that are made that impact the education of my children. I’ve enjoyed serving on the board the past six months, have learned a lot and would like to complete the remainder of the term I was appointed to fill, which expires in 2015.

 Brian Weber, Dysart

I am excited for the opportunity to serve as a board member for the Union Community School District.  Our family has lived in the Dysart area for over 25 years, including my wife Deb and two daughters, Belle and Alexa, who currently attend Dysart Geneseo Elementary School.  I work in our community as a Pioneer Sales Rep, along with helping run our family farming operation.

Being a parent of two children in the District, I am proud to say Union Community Schools have provided my daughters with an excellent start.  I am passionate about ensuring that all of our children get the best possible education to help them succeed in life.  I would like the opportunity to be on the school board so I can support the teachers and staff, and contribute to the great learning environment and future of the school.

My decisions will be based upon what is best for the District as a whole.  I will continue to create opportunities for dialogue, listen and learn, while being open to all possibilities before forming any opinions.  I am passionate about the value of education and strongly believe in teacher-parent partnerships to achieve great outcomes for our children.  I look forward to working with the school community to secure quality education for all our students.
