The Union Knights softball team traveled to NICL conference rival Hudson on Monday, June 23 and split a varsity double header with the Pirates losing the first game 0-2 and winning the second game 7-4.  In the first one, the Knights lost a close match 2-0 as they played good defense only giving up 2 runs, but were not able to get their offense going.  The Knights scored 0 runs on only 2 hits and committed 0 errors. The Pirates scored 2 runs off 5 hits and committed 1 error. Hudson scored one run apiece in each of the first and third innings. Leading the offense was Kaylee Sherwood and Cierra Nolan getting 1 hit each. Peyton Parker pitched for the Knights allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, striking out 5 and walking none. The Knights fall to 7-11 on the season.
In the second game, Union bounced back and won 7-4. The Knights scored three runs in the first inning as Maggie Driscol reached base by error, moved to second on a Peyton Parker single, and then they both scored on a Lauren Barz double. Barz then scored on a Kaitlin Holschlag single.  Hudson scored one run in the first and second innings, and two runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. In the third inning, Union scored three more runs to take the lead back when Kaitlin Holschlag singled, moved to third on a Kaylee Sherwood double, and scored on a Cierra Nolan sacrifice bunt.  Sherwood scored as Hailee Brown reached on base by error. Brown then scored advanced to second and third on pass balls and scored on Maggie Driscol’s sacrifice bunt. In the sixth inning, the Knights scored their final run as Cierra Nolan singled, moved to second on a pass ball, third on Hailee Brown’s sacrafice bunt, and scored on Maggie Driscol’s single. Leading the offense was Lauren Barz and Kaitlin Holschlag getting 2 hits each. Maggie Driscol was on base 2 times. Kaylee Sherwood started pitching for the Knights and picked up the win. Raini Hilmer came in and relived her for 2 innings. Peyton Parker earned the save finishing up the final two innings. Union moved to 8-11 on the year.
