On Thursday, May 28 the Union Knights Softball Team hosted their first home game of the young season, and lost a close game 2-0 to the visiting Jesup J-Hawks. The Knights scored 0 runs on 4 hits and committed 0 errors. The J-Hawks scored 2 run on 6 hits and committed 1 error. Jesup scored their 1st run in the first inning to start the game out. The leadoff batter hit a bloop single down the 1st baseline, advanced to second and then third on a bunt, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Knights had their chances to answer back in the early innings, but hit into 3 double plays to strand their offensive attack. The game turned into a pitching and defensive battle, with Union Knights pitcher Peyton Parker striking out the side in the 2nd inning and tallying a total of 8 strikeouts for the game. The defense helped to limit the J-Hawks to just 6 base runners on the night. Jesup was able to score another run in the 6th inning. The Knights on the other hand, were able to get 9 runners on base, but could not get a key hit to get on the scoreboard against a very good J-Hawks defense. Sophomore Peyton Parker started on the mound for the Knights, going all 7 innings, giving up 6 hits, striking out 8, and walking 0. Her 8 strikeouts added to her first 2 year career total, pushed her past the 200 strikeouts margin as a Union Knight Varsity pitcher. The offensive leaders were: Kaitlin Holschag getting 2 hits, while Peyton Parker and Cierra Nolan each were abe to get 1 hit apiece. Kaylee Sherwood was on base 2 times getting 2 walks. The Knights are now 1-1 for the season.
