The Union Knights softball team lost a close game to Jesup 8-7 on Monday, June 16 in a home doubleheader. The Knights scored 6 runs off 5 hits and committed 1 error. Jesup scored 7 runs off 8 hits and committed 6 errors. Jesup took the lead in the game scoring 3 runs in the second inning. Union responded back by scoring 1 run in the bottom half of the inning when Jess Bohnstengel doubled and then scored when Emma Rottinghaus reached on base by a Jesup error. Jesup answered right back scoring 1 run in the top of the third and fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead. After a 30 minute rain delay, Union made a great comeback scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 advantage. In the inning Peyton Parker, Raini Hilmer, Jess Bohnstengel, Kaylee Sherwood, and Emma Rottinghaus scored runs off a combination of hits, walks, and hard hit balls for errors by Jesup. Union’s defense was able to hold the lead until the top of the seventh inning when Jesup pushed across the tying and go ahead runs making the score 7-6. The Knights made a good attempt of another comeback as Raini Hilmer lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, but was not able to score. Peyton Parker pitched for the Knights allowing 7 runs on 8 hits, striking out 5. Offensively Raini Hilmer was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Jess Bohnstengel reached base 2 times and scored 2 runs. She was making her way back on the field after sitting out for a week with stiches from an injury in a game earlier in the season. The Knights fall to 7-8 on the season with the loss.
The Union Knights lost another close game 5-2 to Jesup a night after the first game was played. The game was started on Monday, June 16, but was delayed in the bottom of the first inning due to lightning and then the tornado sirens going off in town. On Tuesday, June 17 the game was picked back up where it left off, but with the Knights only being able to suit up 9 players for the game. They gave a strong effort and played well, but could not score more than 2 runs as they stranded 8 runners on base including having the bases loaded twice. Jesup scored 5 runs on 9 hits. Union scored 1 run in the 2nd inning when Raini Hilmer doubled, advanced to 3rd on Jess Bohnstngel’s single, and scored on Kaylee Sherwood’s hard hit to second base. Jesup scored 3 runs in the third inning. The Knights scored another run in the third inning when Raini Hilmer tripled, and scored on back to back to back walks. Jesup responded with 2 more runs in the fourth inning. Their defense made some great plays to keep the Knights off the bases and went on to win 5-2. Peyton Parker pitched for the Knights allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and struck out 3 batters. Raini Hilmer had a double and triple for the Knights and scored both runs. Haylee Keune had hits, with Jess Bohnstengel and Peyton Parker also getting hits. Union falls to 7-9 on the year.
