Monday, June 8 in La Porte City

By Todd Parker

It was a pitcher’s duel between two of the top pitchers in the NICL conference and the Union Knights prevailed 1-0 over the Denver Cyclones at La Porte City on June 8.  In the game, Denver was only able to get 3 base runners to first base, while Union had 4.  The scoring happened in the 2nd inning when Justine Nagel walked for the Knights, advanced to 2nd as Ashley Carey’s reached on base due to an error, moved to 3rd on Haylee Keune’s infield hit, and scored on a passed ball to give the Knights a 1-0.  That is all the Knights needed as inning after inning both pitchers and defenses retired batter after batter on either strike outs (19 in the game combined) or grounders and fly balls. The Cyclones junior Jayden Wolters struck out 7 batters, allowed just 1 hit, and walked 2 batters.  The Knight’s sophomore Peyton Parker struck out 12 batters, allowed 3 hits, and walked none.  Union moves to 9-1 on the season and 5-1 in the NICL conference.
