Strong defense, steady pitching, and timely hitting were the keys of success for the Union Knights softball team as they defeated Aplington-Parkersburg 3-1 at home on June 4. Union scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to take the early lead in the game. Leadoff hitter Kaitlin Holschlag lead off the inning with single, advanced to 2nd on Haylee Brown’s bunt single, and went to 3rd on Peyton Parker’s ground out to the pitcher. Both runners scored on a hard hit by cleanup hitter Kaylee Sherwood to take the 2-0 lead. The Falcons were hitless until the 4th inning when they scored 1 run on 2 singles and an overthrow at home plate on a pick off play. The Knights scored one more run in the bottom of the 6th inning when Jordyn Nagle walked, advanced to 2nd on single by Ashley Carey, and scored on smashing double by sister, Justine Nagle. Union ended the game in the 7th after a leadoff double. The runner was stranded at 2nd as the Knights retired the next 3 batters. For the game Union scored 3 runs on 7 hits and committed 1 error. The Falcons scored 1 run on 3 hits and committed 0 errors. Defensive standouts for the game went to Justine Nagle, who had 11 putout catches at first base, with 2 of them being unassisted and Cierra Nolan, who had 3 clean fielded grounders for assists and 1 line drive putout. The offense was led by Kaitlin Holschlag and Justine Nagle who both had 2 hits apiece. Hailee Brown, Kaylee Sherwood, and Ashley Carey each had key hits for the Knights. Pitcher Peyton Parker struck out 6 batters, allowing only 3 hits, and walked 1. The Knights move to 3-1 for the season. The JV team lost a close one, 6-4.
