Day 2 of the North Fayette Tournament was much friendlier to the Union Knights softball team as they won their only game of the day on Saturday, June 7 over the Starmont Stars 7-4. The Knights scored 7 runs on 8 hits and committed 2 errors. The Stars scored 4 runs on 4 hits and committed 4 errors. Union started off the scoring with 1 run in the first inning when Maggie Driscol walked, stole second, and scored on 2 pass balls. The Knights scored in the second inning when Cierra Nolan walked, advanced to second on Emma Rottinghaus’s bunt single, and then scored on 2 straight passed balls. The Stars answered back with 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Knights then broke the game wide open by scoring 5 runs in the top of the fifth inning. Starmont tried to mount a comeback, but was only able to get 2 runs in the top of the seventh inning. Peyton Parker pitched for the Knights allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, while striking out 4. Solid defense behind her in the infield and outfield was crucial to the Union victory. 8th graders Emma Rottinghaus and Hailee Brown lead the Knights attack by getting 3 hits apieace. Maggie Driscol was on base 3 times. Kaitlin Holschlag, Cierra Nolan, and Kaylee Sherwood were on base 2 times apiece. The Knights were slated to play another game in the afternoon, but it was cancelled due to heavy rains. With the victory, Union moved to 7-4 on the season.
