Substance abuse isn’t just a problem for the young. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism 20-30% or people ages 75 to 85 have experienced drinking problems. Loneliness, coping with grief, anxiety, depression or pain are just a few of the reasons why seniors tend to turn to alcohol.

To educate the community about this topic as well as information on how to quit smoking and tips for safe use, storage and prescription of prescription drugs, Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging’s La Porte City Healthy Lifestyles Center will be hosting a special presentation entitled “Substance Abuse and Seniors” presented by Jackie Preston Community Prevention Educator from Pathways Behavioral Services. The presentation will take place on Monday, April 7 at 10:30 AM at the La Porte City Healthy Lifestyles Center located at 300 First Street in La Porte City.

Lunch will be served following the presentation. Meals are offered on a contribution basis for those age 60 and over. Otherwise the cost of the meal is $7.26 for those under the age of 60. If you would like to reserve a lunch, please call 319-272-2086 by April 4.
