March 1 Deadline for School Open Enrollment

Iowa parents and guardians have until March 1 to file applications to open enroll their children for the upcoming school year into a school district other than the one in which they live.
The March 1 deadline, which is required by state law, applies to students in first through 12th grades. The open enrollment deadline for students entering kindergarten is September 1. Open enrollment is not required for 4-year-old children who are enrolling in the statewide voluntary preschool program.
Open enrollment applications must be sent to the school district where the student lives and to the school district where the student wants to transfer. Application forms for the 2014-15 school year can be found in the administrative offices of Iowa school districts or on the Iowa Department of Education’s website: www.educateiowa.gov/pk-12/options-educationalchoice/open-enrollment

2014 Route for Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade Set

The dates have been announced for the RAGBRAI of tractors, the Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade 2014, which will be held June 8-11. It is anticipated that over 500 tractors, along with more than 400 support people, will take part in the Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade ride. This event is an excellent opportunity for tractor collectors and enthusiasts to celebrate their hobby and farm heritage together.
Applications for the Great Eastern Iowa Tractrocade are available online at www.wmttractorcade.com. There is a non-refundable fee of $140 for primary drivers, which includes a t-shirt. The fee for secondary drivers is $65. The ride also allows for the inclusion of a buddy seat, which may seat up to two additional riders. All buddy seats must be approved prior to the ride. On June 9th, Day One, tractors will depart the National Cattle Congress grounds in Waterloo and head north to Denver. The route travels east from Denver before heading north and west to Waverly for lunch. The afternoon route travels through Shell Rock and Finchford before a pit stop is made in Janesville.
Day Two of the Tractorcade (June 10th) sees the route travel north and west of Cedar Falls before heading into Dike for lunch. From Dike, the tractorcade heads south to Reinbeck before stopping in Hudson for an afternoon pit stop.
On June 11th, Day Three of the tractorcade, the route travels to Black Hawk Park for a morning pit stop before traveling to George Wyth State Park.

8th Grade Girls Working Hard to Improve

The 8th grade Union girls basketball season has seen a steady improvement in the teams skills and athleticism. The team consists of point guards Emma Rottinghaus and Abby Johnson, wing player Emily Schmidt and Emma Peters, and post players Lauren Phillips, Audrey Powers, Ariana Barnhardt, and Taylor Short.
The girls have Dike New-Hartford, Denver and Columbus left to play.

UMS Boys Battle Vinton-Shellsburg

The Union Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team got back into action at Vinton after weather had forced postponement of several games.
Down by as many as eight points in the second half, the Knights raced past the Vikings with a strong defensive effort. Leading the way in scoring for Union was Jace Glenn and Koby Alpers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The 7th grade boys team stayed at home to play three games with the Vikings. In the first game, the Knights’s rallied after trailing by 12 points at halftime, coming up just short in a 23-21 game. In the second game, Union held on to a five point lead at halftime to win, 21-17.
In the final game of the night, the Union easily handled the Vikings to come away with a 23-5 victory. The team made 50% of all their shots, with Hunter Klima leading all scorers with eight points.

Weston and Megan Dunlap

Megan Larison and Weston Dunlap were married July 20, 2013 in La Porte City.
Parents of the couple are Jeff and Cheryl Larison of La Porte City and Craig and Julie Dunlap of Dysart.
The Rev. Doug Rokke presided over the 2 p.m. ceremony at American Lutheran Church, followed by a reception at Maucker Union Ballroom at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
Maid of honor was Brook Vaughn of Cedar Rapids. Bridesmaids were Jessica Dunlap of Kaneohe, Hawaii, sister of the groom; Sara Feuerbach of Cedar Falls, Kim Chirillo of Orland Park, Ill., and Kaitlin Holdgrafer of Kansas City, Mo.
Best man was Josh Heyer of New York City, and groomsmen were Sam Knupp and Nic Gage, both of Cedar Falls, Mitchell Belfield of La Porte City and Chris O’Connor of Chicago.
Flower girls were Grace Carmichael of Omaha, Neb., and Taylor Hedeman of La Porte City, and ring bearers were Carter and Wyatt Carmichael of Omaha, Neb., all cousins of the bride.
Seating guests were Caleb Larison and Jess Larison, both of La Porte City, brothers of the bride; and Blake Miehe and Blake Kremer, both of Waterloo.
The bride is a 2011 graduate of the University of Iowa and is employed by the Decorah Community School District as a fourth-grade teacher. The groom, a 2010 graduate of the University of Iowa, is employed as a support analyst for Elysium Technology Group.
They couple resides in Decorah.
