UNI-Dome Hosts Eastern Iowa Sportshow March 14-15

Drake Rousselow from La Porte City will receive the 2014 Trophy Buck Print Award at the 40th Annual Eastern Iowa Sportshow March 14 or 15 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. This award recognizes trophy bucks taken in Iowa and registered with the DNR for the 2013/2014 deer-hunting season. Drake harvested a deer from Fayette County. It scored 142 6/8 points in the Bow – Typical category.
Nearly 400 Iowans harvested a trophy buck during the 2013-2014 Iowa deer-hunting season and registered it with the Department of Natural Resources. To qualify, a buck’s rack must meet or exceed specific minimum scores as determined by the Department of Natural Resources.
Craig Hemsath from La Porte City caught a 19.5 inch, Rainbow Trout in Fayette county and will receive the 2014 Iowa Big Fish Angler Award. Trophy fish awards are given by the DNR for every type of game fish found in Iowa waters. These range from trout, bass, panfish, perch, carp, and sheephead varieties. When caught, the fish must be weighed on registered scales and be certified by a witness. This data along with a witness’s signature is then mailed to DNR for recording.
The Sportshow is scheduled for March 13-15 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Hunting interests at the show include hunting outfitters, equipment, seminars, and antler scoring. Other exhibits include boats, RVs, fishing camps, resorts, tourism, tackle, camping, and outdoor exhibits. Continuous fishing and hunting seminars will run throughout the show. More features include live trout fishing, BB gun range, paintball range and antler scoring and whitetail display. Detailed show information can be found at www.iowashows.com.

Monsanto Supports La Porte-Dysart FFA Chapter

Local farmer and past La Porte FFA President Alvin Bauer entered last year’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities online drawing and was selected to receive a $2,500 donation made payable to a local organization. Alvin directed Monsanto, the sponsor of the initiative, to contribute the monies to the La Porte-Dysart FFA Chapter.
Chapter instructor Louis Beck noted that the group is planning to use the donation this fall to sponsor another “Hunger Blitz” whereby the Union High School student body will spend a day packaging meals, as they did in 2013. The high protein, vitamin enriched meals are then distributed by Meals from the Heartland, a non-profit organization composed of volunteers who package meals for delivery to starving people around the world.

Catch UHS Musical Comedy (If You Can)

The Union High School Fine Arts Department, under the direction of Tim J. Mitchell, Korina Carlson and Mike Bistline, announce the upcoming production of the full-scale musical hit, “Catch Me If You Can.” Based on the hit DreamWorks Motion Picture, starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DeCaprio, this high-flying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught tells the incredible true story of Frank Abagnail Jr.
Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager Frank Abignale, Jr. runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer- living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when his lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Frank is pursued across the country in an effort to make him pay for his crimes.
Many Broadway regulars are behind the creation of the musical. The book is by Terrence McNally who also wrote the book of Union’s 2014 production of “Ragtime”. Music and Lyrics are written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who also wrote the smash hit “Hairspray”.
A cast of 38 students will bring this production to life at the Matt Auditorium at 7 PM on Friday and Saturday, March 20-21. Reserved tickets cost $5 each and may be purchased at the Union High School office beginning Thursday, March 5, on weekdays between the hours of 7:30 AM and 3:30 PM. For more information, contact Tim J. Mitchell at t_mitchell@union.k12.ia.us.
