By Jolene Kronschnabel
It is not too late to join the first ever Big Library Read of an eBook.  Big Library Read is a pilot program in which libraries worldwide offer a single eBook to all of their patrons. The book Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone is available for simultaneous checkouts until May 30, 2013. You can get this free eBook by visiting the Hawkins Memorial Library’s website, www.laporetcity.lib.ia.us, and clicking on the NEIBORS banner.
On Thursday, June 6, the library will begin presenting weekly family friendly summer movies. Cirque du Soleil, Worlds Away is showing at 1:15 PM that day. In this movie an Aerialist entrances a young woman. When they fall into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil and are separated, they travel through the different tent worlds trying to find each other. There will be popcorn and games to play. All ages are invited.
Come to the library for a Father’s Day Card Making Party on Thursday, June 13, from 1 to 5 PM.  We will have the supplies to construct and decorate cards, you bring the creativity, and then you take home a unique card for your father.
The library will show Disney’s fantastical adventure Oz The Great and Powerful on Thursday, June 13, at 1:15 PM, along with popcorn and our Father’s Day Card Making Party.
The library will be closed on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, for the Festival of Trails celebration. Get your books, magazines, and movies early for the weekend.
Hawkins Memorial Library is currently accepting member applications for the Library Board of Trustees. Consider applying if you are interested in the future of the library, reside in Black Hawk County, and are willing to make operating and planning decisions to direct and control all affairs of the library. This is a six-year term starting on July 2, 2013. Board of Trustees meetings are held the second Monday each month at 6 PM.  Apply at the library or City Hall.

Freckles’ Adopt-a-Pet – May 29, 2013

What a snuggle bug! My name is Tuck and I just left my foster home to come to the shelter to be adopted! I am about 8 weeks old and such a sweetheart! I came to the shelter as a stray with my brothers, Kane and Hossa, and we are all ready to find great homes! I am current on vaccinations and my adoption fee is $55 + a $50 deposit that will be refunded upon proof of my neuter.

Break it Down (to build it up)

Matt Auditorium at Union High School, built in 1976, is undergoing its first major renovation, with work scheduled to be completed by October 15, 2013, just in time for the first concert of the 2013-2014 school year.
The renovation will include new paint, carpeting, heating and air conditioning systems, auditorium seats and stage curtains. In addition to an improved acoustical ceiling, the old pod walls will be removed, giving the facility a completely new look.
To help offset some of the project’s costs, the school is sponsoring a “Buy A Seat” program. The new auditorium is projected to seat approximately 560 people, up from the current 420. The cost to participate in the program is $150 per seat and donations are tax deductible. Buy a single seat, an entire row, or even an ENTIRE SECTION! Names of those who purchase seats will be displayed on a plaque in the new auditorium.
For additional information on how you can  show your support of the Union High School Fine Arts Department, please contact the high school office at 342-2697.
