Hawkins’ Happenings – July 31, 2013

By Jolene Kronschnabel
Planet 51 is the movie showing at the library at 1:15 PM on Thursday, August 1. American astronaut Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker lands on Planet 51 thinking he’s the first person to step foot on it. To his surprise, he finds that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders…like Chuck! There will also be popcorn and games for you and your friends.
On Friday, August 2, the library has crafts to make for Summer Reading. Design garden pictures, string birdfeeders, paint a flowerpot, and construct a magic wand from 1 to 5 PM that afternoon. If you haven’t been in to admire the Summer Reading Art Show, do stop soon. Some pretty creative artists have been at the library and are sharing their masterpieces with our patrons. In the movie Tangled, the magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is. This movie is playing on Thursday, August 8, at 1:15 PM at the library.  Enjoy popcorn and games too with your friends.
The library is planning a Nook Class. Learn how to use the NEIBORS program to borrow free eBooks and audio books from the library on your Nook.  Please sign up at the library if you are interested.
August is Children’s National Vision and Learning Month.  If the kids haven’t been reading on a regular basis this summer you may want to check out a few books from the library to get them up to speed for the start of school, which is only a couple of weeks away.

Softball: Postseason Honors for Union Knights

The Union Knights capped off the 2013 season with six selections to the NICL East All-Conference teams. Senior Sam Barz led the way as a first team pick based on her .415 batting average, five doubles and two home runs . Teammates Lauren Barz, Jess Bohnstengel, Raini Hilmer and Peyton Parker were named to the second team. Kaitlin Holschlag was an Honorable Mention selection.
The Knights finished fourth in the NICL East with a 7-5 record, 10-16 overall.
“Our three seniors, Peyton Bockholt, Haley Dietrick and Sam Barz will be greatly missed. They were all great leaders for our program this year. Due to knee surgery, Peyton was unable to play, but was a vital member in our dugout. After not playing softball for the past several years, Haley joined for this, her senior year. Playing infield, outfield, batting, and baserunning, she made great contributions. Sam was the only senior in the starting lineup, with most of her time on the field in the centerfield. Her biggest strengths for our team were her leadership and as an offensive threat,” Head Coach Melanie Barz stated.
“We really gained a great deal of experience this year. Early in the season, we played many people in different position and finally settled on a solid lineup toward the end of the season. As half of our losses came to teams ranked in the top 10 of their respective classes. We learned a lot, which will make us stronger as a team. Union High School softball has a very bright future, with some very talented, hard-working players returning for next season,” she added.

Letter to the Editor – Amanda White

Dear Editor,
I recently took a day trip to visit my aunt and uncle who have lived on Anton Drive in La Porte City for over 30 years. I have very fond memories of visiting them as a child and running around their neighborhood.  Imagine my surprise when I pulled in and found the entire street leading up to their house virtually impassable.
This is not a case of a few potholes that sprouted up over the last winter season. This is a case of years of neglecting the street in this wonderful neighborhood! I am hoping that the City will take action and properly fix (not patch) this road.
Yours sincerely,
Amanda White, Davenport, IA
Editor’s Note: In response to the question about street repairs in the Anton Addition, which is located on the northern edge of La Porte City west of U.S. Highway 218, Mayor Rick Lubben stated in an e-mail, “
