2014 Football: Union 37, Aplington-Parkersburg 0

With first place in Class 2A District 6 on the line, the Union Knights made the road trip to Parkersburg to face perennial power, Aplington-Parkersburg (A-P). In addition to each other, both teams had to account for a brisk wind that would impact on the field strategy, particularly play calls on offense.
It didn’t look good for the Knights early, who won the coin toss and promptly fumbled the opening kickoff away. Out trotted the potent, up-tempo, Falcon offense, perched on the Union 24 yard line. They didn’t stay there for long, however, as a stand made by the Union defense sent a clear message that the night would belong to the Knights.
After turning the Falcons over on downs, it took just one play for Union to get on the scoreboard, as sophomore running back, Isaiah Vaughan sprinted 74 yards on a fake reverse. The Knights added seven more points on their second possession after covering a Falcon fumble on the A-P 38 yard line. Quarterback John Boisen connected with Dylan Bear on a crossing route, who fought his way past two would-be tacklers for a 19 yard touchdown.
The Union offense continued to dictate play in the second quarter. While the Falcon defense made a big fourth down stop in the shadow of their own goal line, the Knights were able to put three more points on the board with a 23 yard field goal by Dakota Hora in the final seconds of the half.
In the second half, the Union defense continued to make plays at critical times, as three consecutive Falcon drives deep into Union territory were turned away on fourth down plays. The shutout of Aplington-Parkersburg on their home turf was the first in nearly 25 years.
Meanwhile, the Knights added two more touchdown passes from Boisen and another long touchdown run by Vaughan to claim the 37-0 victory and sole possession of first place in the District 6 standings.
