School Board Thanks Retiring School Superintendent Neil Mullen, an Exceptional Education Leader

The Union Community School Board of Directors presented retiring Superintendent Neil Mullen with a special clock, thanking him for 30 years of service to the La Porte City and Union Community School Districts.
A 1976 graduate of La Porte City High School, Mullen attended Wartburg College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education with a minor in Business Education in 1980.
After five years teaching Business Education and Physical Education at North Mahaska Community Schools in New Sharon, Mullen returned to his home town in 1986, where he was hired to teach physical education at La Porte City Elementary School. In 1989, Mullen succeeded George Kelley as the principal at Union High School. It was a position he held until 1995, when he was hired as the Elementary Principal at Dysart-Geneseo Elementary School following Joe Coffey’s retirement. In 2005, Mullen became the district’s Superintendent following Barry Green’s departure.
When Mullen’s twelve year tenure as Superintendent comes to a close in June, he will be succeeded by current Union High School Principal, Travis Fleshner.
