The 2019 Hudson United boys soccer team gathered January 31 in the Hudson High School gymnasium to present the team’s prestigious awards to Hudson Athletic Director, Kevin Wurzer, Hudson Superintendent, Dr. Anthony Voss, Union Superintendent, Travis Fleshner and the student bodies of Hudson and Union high schools.

The team presented their 2019 3rd place State Trophy and three national awards from the United Soccer Coaches Association. The first national award was a Team Academic Award. Hudson United had a cumulative grade point average of 3.49 to earn the Academic Award.

The second national award was based on the sportsmanship exhibited by the team on the soccer pitch. They recorded zero cards and ONLY 3 yellow cards all season. This earned them the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Silver Award.

The final and most prestigious national recognition awarded to the team was the inaugural Team Pinnacle Award. To receive this award, a team must earn both the Team Academic AND Team Ethics and Sportsmanship awards while recording an overall winning percentage of 75% or better. In 2019, Hudson United finished with a 20-3 record, an 87% winning percentage.

Hudson United was the only boys team in the state of Iowa to earn the Team Pinnacle Award and just one of ten in the entire nation.

The United Soccer Coaches Association congratulated the group with the following comments:
“This achievement sets your team apart from others, in that they have demonstrated your program’s commitment to success on the field, in the classroom and playing with the highest degree of sportsmanship, integrity and character. We hope you will display the enclosed specially-designed certificate in a place of honor at your school, befitting the accomplishment of your entire team, including the student-athletes and your coaching staff. Congratulations on your team’s distinguished and meritorious achievement.”
