By virtue of a second place finish at a MATHCOUNTS competition hosted by Hawkeye Community College on February 10, a team of Union Middle School students will advance to compete at the State competion on March 31 at Drake University.
Members of the Union team and their individual placement out of the 154 students who competed at Hawkeye: Belle Weber (8th place), Alexa Weber (T-11th), Ty Lorenzen (12th), Gabriel Jesse (T-14th), Marcus Albertsen (T-15th), Ella Smith (18th), Mae Deaton and Tristen Prouse (T-22nd) and Carlie Spore (T-24th).
Other awards were won by Kylea Neuendorf and Sterling Mullen, who earned the top two scores in the alternate division.
