The Union High School Fine Arts Department, under the direction of Tim J. Mitchell, Korina Carlson and Mike Bistline, announce the selection of their annual Spring Musical as Ragtime. This classic American musical by Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens  will be produced March 21 and 22, 2014, in the high school’s newly renovated Matt Auditorium. Auditions for the show will take place December 17-19, with rehearsals beginning January 4. The musical is open to any member of the high school student body, including those who are not currently active in any of the fine arts programs.

The Union Fine Arts Support Team will present a dinner theatre option available for 100 attendees of the Saturday performance. Details on tickets for the dinner theatre and the main stage production will be announced early next year.

Ragtime is a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, and a relevant tale for today. Based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. It draws upon many musical styles from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from bold brass band marches to delicate waltzes, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems.
