Recently Union Middle School students competed in the nationwide math competition called MATHCOUNTS. UMS’ top 14 students in order were: Jacob Lowe, Emma Alpers, Jenna Steinlage, Kody Crawford, Val Ryan, Carter Spore, Megan Carty, Rachel Hellman, Noah Damro, Maddie DeWitt, Zeke Seuser, Anna Smith, Rashawn Williams, and Logan Brown.
The group then went on to the annual Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition at Hawkeye Community College where sixteen students represented Union Middle School. Team members were: Jacob Lowe, Jenna Steinlage, Kody Crawford, and Carter Spore. Competing individually were Val Ryan, Megan Carty, Noah Damro, Rachel Hellman, Maddie DeWitt, and Zeke Seuser. The following students also represented Union as alternates: Logan Brown, Belle Weber, Kylea Neuendorf, Jacob Hill, Jonathan Bronner, and Teagan Prouse.
Union Middle School finished 6th out 12 teams that day. Carter Spore, Megan Carty, and Noah Damro were 24th, 25th, and 26th respectively out of the 94 students at the contest. Jacob Lowe, Rachel Hellman, and Zeke Seuser were 31st, 32nd, and 33rd in the contest, with Union accounting for about 20% of the Top 33 students. Kylea Neuendorf earned Top Alternate honors and received a trophy for her accomplishments.
