A pair of high school seniors from Northeast Iowa took home the top prize at the Beef Scholarship Extravaganza hosted by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation in December. Natalie Hanson of La Porte City and Dustin Smith of Decorah will each receive a $1,500 scholarship for topping the 24 teams that competed at the event that was held at Iowa State University in Ames.
Hanson and Smith, both officers in the NE Iowa FFA District, entered the competition as H&S Cattle Company. The two took the top team scores in seven of the ten different stations that tested specific skills and knowledge of the students. The stations they won included Handling and Health, Marketing, Keep/Cull Replacement Heifers, Job Interview, Industry Issues, Reproduction, and Beef Management.
The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation sponsors several scholarship and learning opportunities for young people.
