Members of the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa deliver the majority of home heating fuel to all Iowans. Heating demand indicators published by the Energy Information Administration show that through February, the winter heating season has been 19 percent colder than last year. Recent cold weather had the greatest effect on propane prices, particularly for consumers in the Midwest. Cold temperatures tightened supplies in the both the Midwest and the East that were already low heading into the winter heating season, in part due to late fall consumption of propane to dry a large and wet corn crop. Residential propane prices in the Midwest rose from an average of $2.08 per gallon (gal) on December 2, 2013, to $4.20/gal on January 27; retail prices fell back to $3.83/gal on February 3 and $2.78/gal by March 3.
