The Mt. Auburn Cemetery has been accepted into the Wreaths Across America Organization’s program to honor fallen Veterans. Wreaths Across America started in 1992 when a wreath company in the state of Maine had a surplus of handmade wreaths for the Christmas season. The owner of the company called his state senator to see what options were available for the wreaths instead of disposing of them. Through coordination, it was decided to place the wreaths on Veteran’s graves in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC. The program has expanded over the years and is now active in all 50 states. Mt. Auburn Cemetery is the sixth location in the state of Iowa to be accepted into the Wreaths Across America program.
Ruth Ann Coots Intlekofer became aware of the program and coordinated submission of Mt. Auburn into the program. As Location Coordinator, she stated “the goal is that every single Veteran in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery will have a wreath placed on their grave for Christmas. This vision turned into reality and all Veterans in the Mt. Auburn Cemetary will have a wreath on their grave, thanks to the many donations that were received. I am so proud of our little community as donations were submitted from friends and family that still live in the area as well as those that live in other states,” she added.
This year, placement of the wreaths will occur nationally on December 13 at 11 AM (Central Standard Time). This event is open to the public and will occur regardless of the weather at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery. A special ceremony will include a guest speaker in addition to the laying of the wreaths. A local cub scout troop will assist as will families and friends of the fallen.
“Anyone can come help place the 90 wreaths in the cemetery on December 13,” Ruth stated. “It is also an excellent way to honor our Veterans and teach our children what those serviceman sacrificed for our freedom.” Fellowship following the forty-five minute ceremony will be at the Mt. Auburn Methodist Church.
